Downtown Redding’s Cozy Book Haven – Shop Around the Corner
A Downtown Bookstore Gem
At Curated Furniture & Decor, we believe that Redding’s charm lives not only in its mountains, lakes, and trails but also in its people—especially the small business owners who pour their hearts into creating spaces and experiences worth discovering.
This month, we sat down with Shop Around the Corner Bookstore, a downtown Redding treasure, to talk about their journey, hidden local gems, and why they believe Redding is a place worth exploring, creating, and calling home.
Whether you’re a Redding local looking for new things to do or a visitor planning your weekend itinerary, this interview will give you the inside scoop on one of the city’s coziest and most community-focused spots.
Q: Tell us who you are and what you do!
Shop Around the Corner:
We moved to Redding in 2013, and before we even unpacked, we were searching for a walkable downtown with historic streets, unique shops, and good restaurants. At first, we were disappointed—downtown wasn’t quite what we hoped for. But as soon as I heard changes were coming, I jumped in to be part of it.
When it came time to open my bookstore, there was no question: it had to be downtown Redding. That’s where the heart of the community is.
Q: What does “living well” in the North State look like for you?
Shop Around the Corner:
It’s all about balance. We love the outdoor spaces—Whiskeytown Lake, the Sacramento River trails, the easy access to Trinity Alps and Lassen National Park—but we also enjoy the city’s smaller-town feel. In Redding, you’re bound to see someone you know when you’re out and about, and that’s a comfort you can’t buy.
Q: If someone’s visiting Redding for the first time, what’s on your must-do list?
Shop Around the Corner:
I’m in love with downtown Redding—so I’d start there. See the murals, browse the local shops, and grab a meal at the Pipeline Restaurant.
If you want to be active, rent an e-bike and ride the Sacramento River Trail. And don’t miss sunset at East Beach in Whiskeytown—it’s pure magic.
Q: Any underrated hidden gems locals and visitors should check out?
Shop Around the Corner:
Old Shasta Coffee Company is a perfect local coffee spot. For a little day trip, head to Mt. Shasta for Lake Siskiyou, or over to McCloud to see the Three McCloud Falls.
Q: Where do you go to recharge and find inspiration?
Shop Around the Corner:
Always the water—whether it’s Whiskeytown, the Sacramento River, or our many creeks and waterfalls. And I can’t forget Redding’s coffee scene. There’s a coffee shop here for every mood.
Q: What local events should people plan a trip around?
Shop Around the Corner:
In the fall, the Redding area is stunning. But if you like cars, Kool April Nites is unmissable. The Redding Rodeo in May is also a blast.
Q: If someone only had 48 hours in Redding, what would you plan for them?
Shop Around the Corner:
Day one: Start with coffee at Old Shasta, Theory, or Evergreen, then head out for a bike ride, kayak trip, or hike. Visit downtown for shopping and dinner, then take in a show at the Cascade Theatre or Redding Civic Auditorium.
Day two: Explore the Sundial Bridge, walk the river trail, and make sure you take in at least one epic view of the mountains.
Q: What makes Redding such a unique place to work and create?
Shop Around the Corner:
It’s a very creative place. Art, music, and big ideas are everywhere—and collaborations happen easily because we all want to see Redding thrive. Plus, being right on I-5 between Chico and Eugene makes us a natural stop for travelers.
Q: Who should we be watching or supporting locally?
Shop Around the Corner:
I’ve worked with A Time For Tea, who hosts the most beautiful literary-themed tea parties in the bookshop. There are also so many small pop-up businesses that deserve love and support.
Q: Any misconceptions about Redding you wish people understood?
Shop Around the Corner:
People think we’re “backward,” but honestly, the people here are genuine, creative, and living beautiful lives.
Q: How would you describe your business vibe?
Shop Around the Corner:
Community-based, without question. I want Shop Around the Corner to be a haven from chaos—a place where books and experiences enrich people’s lives.
Q: What’s something visitors often overlook?
Shop Around the Corner:
Two things: our world-class outdoor recreation and the new energy in downtown Redding. If you haven’t been in years, you’ll be surprised.
Q: What makes you proud to be part of Redding?
Shop Around the Corner:
The generosity here is unmatched. The people have hearts of gold.
Q: What advice would you give to someone moving here?
Shop Around the Corner:
Redding is what you make it. If you get out there and explore, you’ll see beauty everywhere. If you sit on the sidelines, you’ll miss it.
If you haven’t visited yet, put Shop Around the Corner Bookstore on your Redding itinerary. It’s more than a bookstore—it’s a hub for community, creativity, and connection.
